The short answer

Wonderlic says there is no universal "good" or "average" score on its Wonderlic Select test. Results are shown on a 0 to 100 scale that compares you with the typical applicant pool for the job, grouped into four bands, and Wonderlic recommends employers prioritize candidates scoring 50 or above. The timed cognitive section is 50 questions in 12 minutes, scored by an algorithm that weights each question by difficulty.

What the Wonderlic test involves

Wonderlic Select, Wonderlic's current hiring assessment, has three sections: one timed and two untimed (Wonderlic FAQ).

  • Cognitive ability (timed): 50 questions in 12 minutes. This is the only section with right and wrong answers.
  • Motivation (untimed): 58 items about the kind of work you find rewarding.
  • Personality (untimed): 150 items about how you tend to behave at work.

Wonderlic says most people complete the whole assessment in about 35 minutes. The cognitive questions cover "simple math, basic logic, language comprehension, spatial reasoning, pattern identification", and they become more difficult as the test goes on (Wonderlic). The older stand-alone Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT-R) is described by Wonderlic as a 12-minute, 50-question timed assessment, taken online with results available in minutes (WPT-R description).

How the cognitive section is scored

Many websites still describe a Wonderlic score as a simple count of correct answers out of 50. Wonderlic's current description is different. It says its scoring algorithm "is based on a candidate's overall response pattern", weighting each question by its difficulty and by the impact of guessing. Wonderlic says this gives a more precise estimate of cognitive ability than counting correct answers alone (Wonderlic).

Two practical points follow:

  • Hard questions count for more than easy ones under a difficulty-weighted method, but you only reach the hard questions if you keep moving.
  • Guessing is taken into account. Because the scoring considers the impact of guessing, random answers in the last seconds may not help as much as they would on a simple count of correct answers.

On Wonderlic Select, the whole assessment is "scored by a sophisticated, proprietary algorithm that examines all responses" to estimate how likely you are to succeed in the role (Wonderlic FAQ).

The 0 to 100 scale and the four score bands

Wonderlic's help center explains how employers see Wonderlic Select results (Wonderlic Help Center):

  • Overall score: shown on a scale of 0 to 100.
  • Component fit scores: a Cognitive Fit Score, a Motivation Fit Score and a Personality Fit Score, each on the same 0 to 100 scale.
  • Four bands for every score: Weak (0 to 24), Cautionary (25 to 49), Moderate (50 to 74) and Strong (75 to 100).

Scores compare you with "the typical applicant pool for the chosen job title". Wonderlic says a score above 50 means a candidate scored higher than 50% of that applicant pool, and it recommends that employers prioritize candidates scoring 50 or above.

So the number an employer sees is relative. A 60 for one job title and a 60 for another are each measured against a different typical applicant pool.

What is a good Wonderlic score?

Wonderlic's own answer is direct: "There is no universal 'good' or 'average' score for the Wonderlic Select test." The results of the three sections are combined and judged against what the job demands (Wonderlic FAQ). Wonderlic also says the weight given to the cognitive score compared with personality and motivation "varies based on the specific requirements of the job" (Wonderlic).

What that means for you:

  • The only published reference point is Wonderlic's recommendation that employers prioritize scores of 50 or above, the middle of the applicant pool for that job title.
  • Each employer decides how to use the score. Some will look closely at the Strong band; others will treat the score as one input among many.
  • Be wary of "average Wonderlic score" tables on other sites, including lists by profession or by sports position. They are not from Wonderlic's current pages, and they often assume the old count-correct method.

What the employer sees, and when

Wonderlic says employers "have immediate access to your testing results at the conclusion of the assessment". Candidates receive a Candidate Feedback Report only if a link to it appears after the test (Wonderlic FAQ).

A few other points from the same FAQ:

  • Invitations come from the employer. Organizations using Wonderlic Select are responsible for their own testing invitations, so questions about deadlines or a second attempt go to the employer, not to Wonderlic.
  • Test links expire. Wonderlic says links generally stay active for a maximum of 14 days, so do not leave the test until the last day.
  • No calculator. Calculators are not allowed, and Wonderlic says using one would not significantly improve results, since only a few questions involve calculation.

How to raise your cognitive score

Wonderlic says preparation "is not necessary" and offers free sample questions. That is fair: the test measures general ability, not memorized content. Still, most people lose points to the pace and to unfamiliar question types, and both respond to practice. With 50 questions in 12 minutes, you have about 14 seconds per question.

  • Practice at the real speed. Our Wonderlic-style practice test runs at the same pace.
  • Do not get stuck, and do not skip around. Wonderlic advises candidates not to spend too much time on any one question and not to skip around hoping to come back. Make your best choice and move on.
  • Sharpen mental math. Percentages, fractions, ratios and rates come up, without a calculator. See our guides to percentage questions, ratio questions and speed, distance and time.
  • Learn the pattern and logic types. Number series and short deductions repeat. See number series questions and syllogisms.
  • Read the whole question. Under time pressure, people answer the question they expected rather than the one on screen. Words like "not", "least" and "except" decide many items.
  • Take full-length timed mocks so 12 minutes of focus feels normal.

The untimed sections

The motivation and personality sections have no right or wrong answers, according to Wonderlic. They are combined with your cognitive result to judge fit with the job.

There is nothing to study for them. Read each statement properly and answer the way you actually work. Trying to guess an ideal profile tends to produce answers that contradict each other, and it can leave you matched to a job that does not suit you. Take these sections at a calm pace: they are untimed, so there is no reason to rush them after the 12-minute section.

A three-day plan before your Wonderlic

Day 1: find your baseline. Take a free timed sample and note which question types cost you the most time or the most errors.

Day 2: fix the weakest type. Spend 30 to 45 minutes on the one or two types from day 1. Work through the guides above, then redo similar questions at the real pace.

Day 3: one full timed mock. Sit it in one go, in a quiet room, with no calculator. Review every miss afterward and note whether it was a knowledge gap, a misread or the clock.

Test day: use a reliable device and connection, close other tabs, and open the link well before it expires.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Wonderlic score?+

Wonderlic says there is no universal good score. Scores run from 0 to 100 against the typical applicant pool for the job, and Wonderlic recommends employers prioritize candidates scoring 50 or above.

What is the average Wonderlic score?+

Wonderlic says there is no universal average for Wonderlic Select. Because scores compare you with the typical applicant pool for the job title, 50 marks the middle of that pool.

How is the Wonderlic scored?+

Wonderlic says the cognitive section is scored from your overall response pattern, weighting each question by difficulty and the impact of guessing. Wonderlic Select combines it with motivation and personality results.

What do the Wonderlic score bands mean?+

Wonderlic groups scores into Weak (0 to 24), Cautionary (25 to 49), Moderate (50 to 74) and Strong (75 to 100).

Is it bad not to finish the Wonderlic?+

No. Wonderlic says test takers are not expected to answer every question in the time.

Do I see my Wonderlic score?+

Employers see results as soon as you finish. Wonderlic says candidates get a feedback report only if a link to it appears after the test.

Can practice improve a Wonderlic score?+

Practice helps most with pace and familiarity with the question types, which is where most avoidable points are lost. It cannot change the ability the test measures overnight.
